How Much Water Does a Swimming Pool Need? A Hyderabad Owner Guide

Work out exactly how much water your pool needs to fill and to top up through a Hyderabad year, where that water realistically comes from, and how to cut consumption without giving up the pool.

Water is the question most Hyderabad pool buyers ask last, and it is the one that shapes running costs the most. A pool is not a one-time fill. It loses water every day to evaporation, every backwash cycle, and every afternoon of enthusiastic swimming. Planning for that from the start is the difference between a pool that is easy to live with and one that becomes a monsoon-to-summer headache.

Step one: calculate your pool volume

Volume is simple arithmetic. For a rectangular pool:

Length (m) × Width (m) × Average depth (m) = Volume in cubic metres. One cubic metre is 1,000 litres.

Average depth matters because most pools slope. If your pool runs from 1.2 m at the shallow end to 1.8 m at the deep end, the average depth is 1.5 m.

Worked examples

  • Compact plunge pool, 4 m × 3 m, 1.2 m deep: 4 × 3 × 1.2 = 14.4 cubic metres, about 14,400 litres
  • Typical villa pool, 8 m × 4 m, 1.5 m average: 8 × 4 × 1.5 = 48 cubic metres, about 48,000 litres
  • Large farmhouse pool, 12 m × 6 m, 1.6 m average: 12 × 6 × 1.6 = 115.2 cubic metres, about 115,000 litres

For freeform or kidney shapes, break the pool into rough rectangles and add them, or ask your builder for the figure from the drawings. It should be on the design set.

Step two: budget for evaporation

An uncovered outdoor pool loses water constantly. The rate depends on air temperature, water temperature, humidity and above all wind. Hyderabad gives you the full range: a dry, hot, breezy April behaves nothing like a humid August.

As a planning rule, an exposed pool in a hot dry Indian summer commonly loses in the region of 5 to 10 mm of depth per day, dropping well below that during the humid monsoon months. Applied to the 8 m × 4 m pool above, which has a 32 square metre surface:

  • At 5 mm/day: 32 × 0.005 = 0.16 cubic metres, about 160 litres a day
  • At 10 mm/day: about 320 litres a day

Across a peak summer month that is roughly 5,000 to 10,000 litres from evaporation alone. Note the driver: surface area, not depth. A wide shallow pool evaporates faster than a narrow deep one holding the same volume.

The other losses

  • Backwashing the sand filter — typically several hundred litres per cycle, run every week or two depending on load
  • Splash-out and carry-off — small per swim, but a weekend with a full house adds up
  • Leaks — should be zero, and any persistent unexplained loss deserves investigation rather than topping up

Telling evaporation from a leak: the bucket test

Fill a bucket with pool water, set it on a step so it is partly submerged, and mark the water level inside the bucket and on the pool wall. Leave the pump running normally for 24 hours with no swimming. Evaporation affects both equally. If the pool level has dropped noticeably more than the bucket, you have a leak, not weather. Call your builder rather than compensating with the hose.

Step three: decide where the water comes from

Across Hyderabad, pool owners generally draw on some combination of borewell supply, municipal supply and tanker deliveries. Each has trade-offs worth understanding before you commit.

  • Borewell — usually the cheapest to run, but bore water in and around Hyderabad is frequently hard and high in dissolved solids. That has direct consequences for scaling, which we cover in our guide to hard water and pool chemistry. Test before you rely on it.
  • Municipal supply — generally better quality for pool use, but volumes and timing may not suit a large initial fill.
  • Tankers — the usual answer for the initial fill of a larger pool. Rates vary considerably by area and season, and rise sharply in peak summer, so get quotes locally rather than assuming a figure.

Plan the initial fill as a separate exercise from ongoing top-up. Filling 48,000 litres in one go is a logistics question. Replacing 200 litres a day is a plumbing question, and is best handled by an auto-fill valve so the level never drops far enough to expose the tile line or starve the skimmer.

Step four: cut consumption

Water use is not fixed. Several measures make a substantial difference:

  • A pool cover is the single biggest lever. Covering the pool overnight and when it is not in use dramatically reduces evaporation, because it removes the water surface from the air. It also keeps debris out and reduces the chemical load.
  • Windbreaks work. Wind across the surface accelerates evaporation. A hedge, screen or well-placed wall on the prevailing wind side pays back quietly, every day.
  • Rainwater harvesting suits Hyderabad well. The monsoon delivers a large volume in a short window. Directing roof runoff to a storage sump, filtered before use, offsets a meaningful share of the following summer top-up.
  • A cartridge filter avoids backwash losses compared with a sand filter, at the cost of periodic cartridge cleaning and replacement.
  • Do not drain and refill unnecessarily. Balanced water, maintained properly, lasts for years. Full drains should be a considered decision, not routine, and never during a high water table without professional advice, because an empty shell can float.

What this means for sizing your pool

If water availability is a real constraint on your site, it should influence the design rather than be discovered afterwards. A smaller surface area with adequate depth gives you a usable pool with materially lower evaporation. A plunge pool or compact lap pool can deliver most of the daily benefit of a large pool at a fraction of the water footprint.
